This piece was set as a challenge - make a seat from a single sheet of 3mm MDF, using only the simplest of screw based fixings, and no other materials. In a flexible sheet material curved shapes often give more strength and tension can be better than compression. This stool uses four tapered sheets connected by bolts and curved into a state of constant tension. With the two grey discs adding rigidity, the structure is strong enough to stand on but is currently being used as a table in my sitting room. |
